KOREAN CULTURAL CENTRE

CAMPUS won the open competition to design the new Korean Cultural Centre in Stockholm. Originally constructed in 1929 as a church, the transformed Centre embodies the evolution of cultural spaces, having been deconsecrated, renovated in 1999, and repurposed as an office until 2020. Now, as a hub for cultural exchange, the Centre reflects the synergy of historical preservation and contemporary design.
Externally, the building envelope remains unchanged, but internally we have re-organised and re-designed the main public floors to give the visitor an entirely new and unique backdrop to the displays of Korean literature, art, music, and food culture. The 1,660 square meters of multipurpose space within the Centre features a café, library, kitchens, classrooms, and a redesigned main atrium space.
Working to a very tight budget constraint, we accepted the responsibility of sourcing and managing the various fit out productions. This helped us to focus the budget on the items that mattered the most to the overall project, while at the same time providing the client with our knowledge of production methods and costs. This process has since become a common working method in our practice, where we take on both the role of the architect and the project managers for both smaller and larger interior fit outs.
