KULTURMILJÖRUMMET KIRSEBERG
Malmö, Sweden
To the east of central Malmö lies Lokstallarna, a former railway yard in the Kirseberg area. As Lokstallarna is going through a redevelopment process, special care needed to be given to the cluster of old warehouse and workshop buildings, Kulturmiljörummet, as they were intented to hold the more public functions of the area. CAMPUS and Kulturstaden were asked to facilitate a process together with various stakeholders, where we through a series of workshops developed ideas for strategies concering programming, heritage and conservation, and architecture.
The programming of Kulturmiljörummet was developed to make possible a mix of tenants within the fields of culture and art production. The theme Verk/Stad (Workshop/City) was used to frame a particular kind of ecosystem where production is at the core. There is already a growing community of tenants in the area that operate within this field, from coffee roasters to content and media production, and we propose to use this seed as the foundation for finding and selecting apropriate new tenants, and to create a vibrant mixed community.
The heritage and conservation strategy was developed to fix the key qualities of both the buildings, with thir obvious architectural qualites of large openings in beautiful brick facades, but also the landscape which has developed naturally as the area was left to decay. This type of rugged and resilient brownfield landscape is unique to the area, and will play a key part in future landscape design in order to retain a sense of place and history.
Architecturally, we developed proposals for both the original buildings and new development within Kulturmiljörummet. Three main sites were identified for development, largely focused on residential use. We see the addition of residential units within Kulturmiljörummet as crucial to create a vibrant urban centre. A design guide for new development was created where key formal and material attributes were developed in sync with the heritage strategy,
