VALLASTADEN SOCIAL HOUSING

Linköping, Sweden

INITIATIVET and INTERVALLET are two multi-family residential buildings that together comprise a total of 55 rental apartments and two commercial spaces, all situated in the innovative district of Vallastaden, Linköping. This area has notably transformed into a testing ground for modern housing construction and urban planning practices in Linköping.

The underlying concept was to demonstrate that it is possible to build affordably while simultaneously maintaining a distinct architectural vision. These buildings effectively challenge conventional ideas regarding desirable housing qualities by prioritizing aspects such as space, volume, and natural light, instead of traditional finishes that often involve labor-intensive construction processes. The prefabricated concrete facade plays a multifunctional role, serving as a structural frame but also as a climate shell and a finished surface all at once. These design considerations have enabled an impressive ceiling height of five meters in all apartments, which facilitates the creation of loft spaces that enhance livability. Additionally, financial concerns were critically addressed during the planning stages, ensuring that the buildings would meet both passive house standards and generate more energy than they consume.

The two building projects originated from two separate land allocation competitions; however, through constructive dialogue between the municipality and the developer, it became possible to construct them simultaneously, thereby ensuring that they remained within the established budgetary constraints.
