BODÖ CITY HALL

Bodö, Norway

The competition for the new City Hall in Bodö called for both a remodelling of the existing building, and an addition in the form of a new building which would become a new landmark in the city. Our proposal is an attempt to break down the sizeable programme into smaller volumes that would mirror the scale of the surrounding city. A large portion of the programme was also housed under a new podium, which creates a link between the two old buildings and the new. The roof of the podium becomes a new public square, an important symbolic feature of a town hall.

The new building holds many of the formal and public functions, such as assembly halls, conference rooms, and a top floor dedicated to a restaurant that serves staff during the day and has the capacity to host public events in the evenings. The rotated volumes bring light in from different directions, and create unique views and varied light qualites as you move through the building. The materiality is a mineral and bronze palette, that ties in with the original building and creates further ties to the city the new building is to represent.
