BARKARBYSTADEN III

Järfälla, Sweden

Our timber-construction project *Träkonstnären I & II* consists of 226 apartments across two blocks in Barkarbystaden, submitted in a land allocation competition in 2022. We chose to compete in both blocks, achieving 2nd and 3rd place with our proposals. Both blocks were proposed to be built using prefabricated timber volume elements, set on top of a ground-level podium and a partially sunken garage constructed on-site. In collaboration with Trähem, we developed a design that achieves high architectural standards with low production costs, thanks to a highly efficient building system.

From an urban perspective, both proposals offer a careful study of how the building mass interacts with its surroundings, considering the street profile from pedestrians' viewpoints, sightlines, natural light, and architectural qualities. Openings that punctuate the blocks provide shared outdoor spaces, linking the private courtyard with the public urban environment. These spaces are connected by an open top floor, a rooftop park, where residents can move freely through the block. This design fosters a safe living environment and encourages neighbourly interaction and a strong sense of community.
