SÄTRA Etapp
Västerås, Sweden
Skördefesten is a residential area with 114 apartments across five buildings and ten row-houses in Sätra, an emerging district in Västerås. The master plan for Sätra is divided into zones with different themes, with this phase focusing on community through urban gardening.
In line with the gardening theme, we have created a contemporary interpretation of historic agricultural references, influencing everything from landscape design to form, choice of materials, and detailing.
The roof design takes inspiration from traditional storage buildings, which typically have gabled roofs and an elevated central section. In this proposal, however, we have opted for a mono-pitch variation.
Timber framing has a long-standing place in Swedish building traditions and was originally a timber-saving construction technique. Timber framing, or a wooden framework, creates a structure filled in with masonry or wattle and daub. Echoes of this building method appear in the detailing of the facades in this design.
